HAWAII ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER

Two of you, an officiant, and a shoreline with nobody else on it. We photograph elopements on all four main islands, arrange the permissions, and hand you every frame within 24 hours.

People elope in Hawaii for one of two reasons: either a wedding at home had grown into something they never wanted, or they simply like the idea of a morning where nothing happens except the thing itself. Both lead to the same question — what does it actually take to stand on a beach here and be married by breakfast?

Less than you fear. The state asks for no residency, no waiting period and no blood test; the license costs $65 and takes one appointment. What takes planning is the ground you stand on, because every stretch of sand in Hawaii belongs to somebody with an opinion about ceremonies. That part is ours to handle, and the rest of this page is how the day works once it is handled.

WHAT AN ELOPEMENT DAY LOOKS LIKE

  1. Before the day

You apply for the license online and we agree on the spot, the hour and the backup for weather. If you still need an officiant, we point you at the licensed ones we work with rather than leaving you to a directory.

  2. First light or last

Almost every elopement we photograph happens at the edges of the day. Sunrise means an empty beach and nobody watching; sunset means warmth and color and a few strangers clapping. Both beat a midday ceremony in full sun.

  3. Ten minutes of vows

The ceremony itself is short — vows, rings, a lei exchange if your officiant offers one, a blessing. We photograph it from close enough to hear you and far enough not to be part of it.

  4. The hour that follows

This is where the photographs come from: walking, standing in the water, the dress doing whatever the wind tells it to. By then the nerves have gone and you look like yourselves again.

  5. Afterwards

Your officiant files the license with the state and you order the certified copy. Every frame we took reaches you within 24 hours; the retouched set lands in 3–7 business days.

Every piece of paper, in order, with the costs and the lead times: our guide to eloping in Hawaii.

CHOOSING THE ISLAND

Oahu

Easiest to arrange and cheapest to reach: officiants, florists and stylists all sit within half an hour of each other. Dawn on the east-facing beaches is as private as this state gets. The Oahu page has the detail.

Maui

For an evening ceremony on the water. The south and west coasts take the sunset head-on, and between December and April whales surface offshore while you say your vows. County permits here need about two weeks, so give us notice.

Kauai

For cliffs, green mountains and almost nobody in the background. Hanalei in summer, the dry south shore in winter. The most remote-feeling ceremony of the four islands without actually being hard to reach.

Hawaii Island

For black sand, lava fields and an horizon with nothing on it. The Kohala coast at sunset looks like no other wedding photograph in anyone’s feed, and the island is quiet enough that you will not share the beach.

WHEN TO DO IT

  • Winter (December–April) brings whales, greener mountains, big surf on north-facing shores and a sunrise you can reach without a four a.m. alarm. It is also our busiest season, so dates go early.
  • Summer (May–October) flattens the ocean almost everywhere, pushes sunset past seven and makes the north shores usable again. Hotter at midday, which matters more than people expect in a suit.
  • Mid-week beats weekends on every island. Fewer people in the background, easier parking, and inside a state park it may be the only option at all, since those permissions skip weekends and public holidays.
  • Allow a day of slack. Couples who arrive the night before, elope on day three and fly home on day seven have room to move the ceremony if a storm sits over the island.

ELOPEMENT FAQ

What does an elopement in Hawaii cost?

The fixed parts are small: the state marriage license is $65 and a certified copy is $10. After that it is who you hire. Our photography is $550 for an hour on Oahu, plus travel to another island. An officiant, flowers, leis and hair and makeup are separate, and most couples we photograph spend far less than a wedding at home.

Which island should we elope on?

If you want it simple and affordable, Oahu. If you want a sunset on the water, Maui. If you want cliffs and green, Kauai. If you want black sand and open sky, Hawaii Island. Tell us what you picture and where your flights land, and we will give you a straight answer.

How many people can come?

An elopement is usually the two of you, sometimes with parents or a witness or two. Once you pass about ten guests you have a small wedding: chairs, shade and a different permit. We will say so rather than let you find out on the beach.

Do you help with the paperwork?

We tell you exactly what to do and when — the online application, the in-person appointment with a license agent, the thirty-day expiry — and our guide walks through the whole process. The permits for the location are ours to arrange.

Can we have the ceremony on any beach?

Not quite. Wet sand is state ground and a ceremony on it needs state consent; the lawn behind is county property, and a number of county parks rule out commercial work altogether. We verify the exact spot against your date before anyone promises you anything.

What if the weather turns?

Every island here has a dry side and a wet one, usually within an hour of each other. We watch the forecast with you from a week out and move the location rather than lose the date.

Do you film as well as photograph?

Yes. A videographer can work alongside the photographer so you have the vows in your own voices, plus drone footage where it is permitted.

Bringing a guest list rather than a witness? That is a wedding. Wondering what a package would have included? We break it down on elopement packages. Everything we charge sits on the prices page.
