MAUI ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER

A ceremony at the end of the day on a west-facing shore, with whales offshore in winter. We fly over from Oahu, handle the county paperwork and send you everything the next morning.

Maui is the island people choose when they want their vows and the sunset in the same photograph. Its two resort coasts both look out at the evening, which is why almost every ceremony we shoot here starts about ninety minutes before dark and ends with the sky going orange behind you.

The unromantic half is worth knowing anyway. Paperwork here moves at its own pace: roughly a fortnight for the county, a separate office for the wet sand, and the summit park playing by rules of its own. All three are ours to chase. You choose the beach and the hour.

WHERE COUPLES ELOPE ON MAUI

Wailea’s small beaches

Polo, Ulua, Mokapu — a chain of short crescents on the dry south shore, each with a parking lot and a path down. Calm water, the sun setting between Lanai and Kahoolawe, and a ceremony that can start twenty minutes after you leave your room.

Kapalua Bay

A sheltered half-circle at the north end of the west side, ringed with lava rock and ironwood. The most protected water on this coast, which matters if there is any swell running or if anyone in the group is nervous about waves.

Makena

Wide, empty and backed by a cinder cone. The scale here is unlike anywhere else on Maui. The shorebreak is genuinely dangerous, so the ceremony stays well up the sand and we keep the water in the background rather than at your ankles.

Olowalu

Palms right at the waterline and the West Maui mountains behind them, with water that lies flat most mornings. The one place on this island where a sunrise ceremony looks as good as a sunset one.

Upcountry and Haleakalā

Rolling pasture, jacaranda in spring, and the crater above it all. Every car going up for first light needs a booking, professional work needs the park’s own blessing, and the air before dawn sits near freezing — a plan rather than an impulse.

PLANNING IT FROM THE MAINLAND

  • Book the photographer and officiant first. Everything else on Maui has supply; those two do not, especially for winter sunsets.
  • Apply for the license within thirty days of the ceremony, then meet an agent in person once you land — both of you, with photo ID.
  • Give us two weeks for the county permit, more if your heart is set on a state park or the summit.
  • Plan the ceremony for the second or third day of the trip. It gives the weather a chance to misbehave without taking the date with it.
  • Keep the guest list under about ten. Past that it becomes a small wedding with chairs, shade and a different permit — doable, but a different conversation.

Step-by-step on the license and the costs: how to elope in Hawaii. More on the island itself: photoshoots on Maui.

MAUI ELOPEMENT FAQ

How much is an elopement photographer on Maui?

Coverage runs $550 for the hour, with a separate travel line for the inter-island flight and the day it occupies. On top of that sit the $65 state license and whatever you spend on an officiant and flowers. The travel number is confirmed in writing before anything is booked.

Which Maui beach is best for a small ceremony?

Wailea if you want easy and reliable, Kapalua if you want shelter and shade, Makena if you want scale and do not mind standing back from the water. All three face the evening, so we build the day around sunset.

Do we need a permit to marry on a Maui beach?

Yes — and we file it. The county wants a film permit for professional work in its parks, with about a fortnight of lead time; the wet sand is a state matter and goes through a different office. Give us the date early and none of this reaches you.

Can we get married at the top of Haleakalā?

It is possible and it is paperwork. The national park handles its own permissions for ceremonies and professional photography, sunrise entry is reserved per vehicle, and the summit sits at 10,000 feet — expect near-freezing air and thin breath while you say your vows.

Will whales be visible?

In winter, frequently. Maui sits beside the sheltered water where most of the humpbacks spend the season, and from the beaches on this side you can watch them without binoculars while the officiant is still talking.

What about Lahaina?

Not somewhere we work, and not somewhere to build a wedding day around. Cars have been driving down Front Street again since August 2026, but rebuilding continues and residents are living inside it. Choose the coastline north or south of town instead — both are open and lovely.
