MAUI PHOTOGRAPHER
Couples, families and proposals photographed across Maui — from the quiet crescents of Wailea to the cliffs of the north shore. We fly in from Oahu, arrange the permits and send every photo within 24 hours.
Maui runs on a different clock than our home island. Everything you booked a hotel for looks out at the evening, so the hour worth photographing arrives at the end of the day rather than at dawn — and from December through April there are humpbacks in the channel while we work.
Ocean Eyes Hawaii is a photo and video team based in Waikiki, flying to Maui for sessions all year. We come over early enough to walk the spot before you arrive, check the tide and the surf for your exact date, and deal with whichever office — county or state — has to say yes to a camera on that stretch of sand.
WHERE WE PHOTOGRAPH ON MAUI
Wailea
A string of small crescent beaches on the dry south shore, each with its own parking and a path down from the coastal walk. Calm water, pale sand, and the sun dropping behind Lanai and Kahoolawe straight in front of you. The easiest place on the island to get a classic sunset frame without a hike.
Kaanapali
The long resort beach on the west side, with Black Rock at its northern end and Molokai across the channel. If you are staying here, we can be shooting ninety seconds from your lobby. Come at the end of the day: the morning light is behind the mountains and the beach is at its busiest by ten.
Kapalua and Napili
Further north the coast folds into small protected bays ringed with lava rock and ironwood. Kapalua Bay is the calmest water on this coast — good with small children — and the headlands give you something other than open horizon in the background.
Makena and Big Beach
Wide, wild and undeveloped, with Puʻu Olai rising at one end. It photographs like nowhere else on Maui. It also has a famous shorebreak that breaks directly onto sand: we work back from the waterline here and keep children well away from the water.
Olowalu
A shallow, flat stretch between Lahaina and Maalaea with palms right at the sand and the West Maui mountains behind. The water is mirror-still at dawn, which is rare on this island, and the reef keeps it that way most mornings.
Hoʻokipa and the north shore
Cliffs, windsurfers and green turtles hauled out on the sand most afternoons. Dramatic and very Maui, with two rules: the wind is serious here, and federal guidance asks everyone to stay at least ten feet from a resting turtle. We frame around them, never near them.
ʻĪao Valley
Deep green ridges and the needle, fifteen minutes inland from Kahului — the one place on Maui that looks like rainforest rather than coast. Out-of-state visitors need a reservation booked in advance, with an entry fee and parking paid separately, so this is a planned stop rather than a spontaneous one.
Haleakalā at sunrise
Above the clouds at 10,000 feet, with the crater going orange under your feet. Every vehicle entering for sunrise needs a reservation booked in advance through the national park, and it is genuinely cold up there before dawn — jackets, not sundresses. Worth it once in a lifetime; not a session for a toddler.
THE BEST TIME FOR PHOTOS ON MAUI
Sunset is Maui’s hour
Both resort coasts look out at the evening, so the last light drops into the water right in front of you. On Oahu we chase dawn; here we almost always book the ninety minutes before dark.
Whales, December to April
The shallow channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai holds the densest winter gathering of humpbacks in the state. They breach a few hundred yards off the south and west beaches while we work, and now and then one lands in the background of a frame.
Wet and dry sides
Kihei and Wailea are dry almost all year. The north shore and the road to Hana take the rain that keeps them green. If your week looks wet, we move the session south rather than cancel it.
Wind builds through the day
The trades funnel between the two volcanoes and pick up in the afternoon, especially around Maalaea and the north shore. Long veils and loose hair are easier early.
HOW A MAUI SESSION WORKS
You tell us the week, where you are staying and the hour you can slip away. We suggest the beach that fits all three, fly over, scout it, and meet you there with a plan rather than a shrug. An hour of coverage is $550 plus travel covering the flight and the working day; you get that number before you commit. Every frame is yours the next day, with the retouched selection about a week later. If a storm or a swell makes the spot unusable, we move you to the sheltered side of the island instead of cancelling.
PHOTOGRAPHING ON MAUI: YOUR QUESTIONS
How much is a photographer on Maui?
An hour of photography on Maui is $550 plus travel, which covers our flight from Oahu and the day it takes. Tell us your dates and we will give you the exact number before you decide — there is no package you have to guess at.
Where is the best place for photos on Maui?
For a reliable sunset with calm water: Wailea or Kaanapali. For drama: Makena or the north shore cliffs. For green mountains instead of beach: ʻĪao Valley. We pick by where you are staying, the time you can get away and what the ocean is doing that particular week.
Do you fly in from Oahu, or are you based on Maui?
We are based in Waikiki and fly over for sessions. The hop is well under an hour and there are flights all day, so a Maui booking is ordinary scheduling for us. We arrive with time to walk the location before you get there.
Do we need a permit for a photoshoot on a Maui beach?
You do not — that is our job. Maui County requires a film permit for commercial photography in county parks and asks for about two weeks to process it, while the sand itself is state land with its own permit. We sort out which one your spot needs and arrange it.
Can we photograph sunrise at Haleakalā?
Yes, with planning. The national park requires a reservation for every vehicle entering before sunrise, booked ahead online, and there are separate rules for commercial work that we handle. Dress for near-freezing: the summit is 10,000 feet up and it is dark when you leave your hotel.
Is it appropriate to shoot in Lahaina?
We do not photograph in the burn zone, and we would ask you not to visit it either. Front Street reopened to traffic in August 2026, but much of Lahaina is still an active recovery area and people live with that every day. There is more than enough beautiful coastline either side of it.
When should we book?
As early as your dates are fixed. Winter sunsets and whale season fill first, and on Maui we are also fitting a flight around your hour, so the calendar matters more than it does at home on Oahu.
