HAWAII VOW RENEWAL

The ceremony without the bureaucracy: no license, no appointment, no thirty-day clock. Just the two of you, a shoreline and whatever you want to say to each other.

Here is the part people rarely realize: because you are already married, a renewal carries none of the legal machinery of a wedding. Nothing to apply for, nobody to register with, no fee to the state. It is the easiest ceremony it is possible to hold in Hawaii, and it can be arranged in days rather than months.

What is left is the part that matters — choosing an hour when the beach is quiet, deciding whether anyone else is there, and saying something out loud that you have probably only thought.

WHO DOES THIS, AND WHY

Ten years on, with the children there

The commonest version we photograph: the two of you say something to each other, and the kids who did not exist at the wedding stand beside you. Twenty minutes of ceremony, an hour of family photographs.

The wedding you did not get

Couples who married at a courthouse, during the pandemic, or in a hurry before a deployment. No guests, no venue, no catering — just the dress and the ocean and somebody to say the words.

An anniversary trip

You are already here for the twenty-fifth or the fortieth. A renewal turns the trip into an occasion and gives you photographs of yourselves rather than of the view.

A promise of your own

No officiant, no script, nobody watching. Some couples simply want to stand in the water at sunrise and say something privately while we stay far enough back to be invisible.

HOW TO PLAN ONE

  • Pick the hour before the place. Sunrise is private and soft; sunset is warm and shared with other people. Everything else follows from that choice.
  • Decide whether you want a celebrant. A short led ceremony with a blessing takes about fifteen minutes; saying your own words takes five and often lands harder.
  • Keep the group small if you want it to stay simple — up to about ten people needs nothing beyond what we arrange.
  • Bring the rings, or new ones. Exchanging them again is the moment most couples end up framing.
  • Leave the dress question open. The original, something new, or neither — all of them photograph well, and the water does not care.

Where to stand: locations on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island.

VOW RENEWAL FAQ

Do we need a license or any paperwork?

No. A vow renewal is not a legal event — you are already married — so there is no state license, no fee and no appointment. That makes it far simpler to organize than a wedding and possible at short notice.

Do we need an officiant?

Only if you want one. Many couples ask a celebrant to lead a short ceremony with a Hawaiian blessing and a lei exchange; others say their own words with nobody else present. Both photograph well.

How much does it cost?

Same rates as any other session we shoot: $399 for the short version in one spot, $550 for sixty minutes on Oahu, with an added line for the flight if you are marrying on another island. A celebrant and flowers, if you want them, you pay for directly.

Where should we do it?

Somewhere that means something to you, or somewhere beautiful, and occasionally both. First light on the east-facing beaches of Oahu buys the most privacy; Maui is simplest at the other end of the day. Married here the first time? We will gladly walk you back to the same sand.

Can our children or parents be there?

Yes, and they usually are. Small groups need nothing extra; once you are past about ten people it starts to look like a wedding to the permit office, and we plan accordingly.

Should we wear the dress again?

If it still brings you joy, absolutely — and it will get wet if you let it, which makes the best photographs of the day. Plenty of couples choose something new instead and keep the original for the album.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Less than you think, because there is no paperwork waiting on anyone. We have photographed renewals arranged in a week. Sunrise dates in winter are the exception and go early.
