HONOLULU PHOTOGRAPHER

A photoshoot in the city rather than on a postcard: murals in Kakaʻako, old streets downtown, the view from Tantalus and the reef-flat water at Ala Moana. Mini sessions from $399, every photo within 24 hours.

Honolulu is the only city in the islands, and it photographs like one: painted walls, arcades, a harbor, a skyline with a volcano behind it. Most visiting photographers only shoot its beaches. We live here, so we also know the block in Kakaʻako that is repainted every spring and the hour when downtown is empty enough to stand in the middle of the street.

This page is the city itself. If you want the whole island — the windward beaches, the North Shore, the ridges — that lives on our Oahu photographer page, and the hotel strip has its own page for Waikiki photoshoots.

CITY SPOTS WE COME BACK TO

Diamond Head and the crater road

Diamond Head Road climbs past a series of pull-offs set well above the surf, the lighthouse directly below them. Entering the monument needs a booking if you live outside Hawaii, and it keeps park hours — but nobody gates the road itself, and the coastline from there is the same one.

Ala Moana and Magic Island

The city’s own park: a reef-protected shoreline, old banyans on the lawn and a peninsula at the end that looks back at Diamond Head. Free parking, open early, ten minutes from downtown. Our first suggestion for anyone who wants the city version of a beach session.

Kakaʻako murals

Blocks of warehouse walls painted over every year during the city’s mural festival. Colour, graphic backgrounds and shade between buildings — the opposite of a beach photograph, and the right call when somebody in the group is tired of sand.

Downtown and Chinatown

Arcades, banyan-lined streets, old storefronts and the only real architecture in the state. Best on a Sunday morning when the streets are empty. Bring shoes you can walk a few blocks in.

Tantalus and Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa

Twenty minutes up into the hills behind the city and the whole of Honolulu lies below: downtown, the harbor, Diamond Head at the far end. The gate opens at seven and closes before dark, so this is an afternoon stop rather than a sunrise one.

Kahala and the eastern suburbs

Quiet stretches of sand under ironwoods east of Diamond Head, with the reef holding the water flat. Almost no visitors, easy parking, and a softer, more domestic feel than Waikiki — good for families staying outside the hotel strip.

WHY BOOK A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO LIVES HERE

  • We live and work here: we know which lot fills first, which lookout has the sun behind it at five, and where the city is quiet on a weekday morning.
  • Sessions fit around a city schedule — a sunrise before meetings, an hour between check-out and the airport.
  • Photo and video from the same team, so a session can produce both without a second booking.
  • Permits, where a spot needs one, are our job: the shoreline answers to the state, the parks to the city.
  • Every photo within 24 hours, edited favorites in 3–7 business days.

HONOLULU PHOTOSHOOT FAQ

How much does a photographer cost in Honolulu?

Our short session — three quarters of an hour, one location — starts at $399. A full hour anywhere in town is $550. No travel charge within Honolulu: this is where we live.

Where should we shoot in the city rather than on a beach?

Kakaʻako for murals and color, Chinatown and downtown for architecture, Tantalus for the view over the whole city. All three photograph better in the first hours of the day, before the heat and the traffic.

Can we do a session between flights?

Yes, and we do it often. Ala Moana and Kakaʻako are both ten to fifteen minutes from the airport, and a 45-minute session fits comfortably into a long layover.

Is Honolulu the same as Waikiki?

Waikiki is a neighborhood inside Honolulu — the hotel strip and its beach. If you are staying there and want something a short walk away, see our Waikiki page. This page covers the wider city: the lookouts, the parks, the murals and the quiet shorelines on either side.

What time of day is best?

Sunrise for the south-facing beaches and empty streets; late afternoon for Tantalus and the Diamond Head lookouts, when the light comes from behind you. Midday in the city is harsh and hot, and we will suggest shade if that is your only window.

Do you photograph events and business portraits in town?

We are a couples, family and wedding team first. For portraits, engagement sessions and small ceremonies in the city, yes — tell us what you need and we will say honestly whether we are the right fit.
