Best Places to Propose on Oahu: 12 Spots for Every Style

Twelve places to propose on Oahu — sunrise beaches, ocean lookouts, city views and sunset lagoons — with the best time to go and how to keep it a surprise.

Surprise proposal on the rocky coast in Hawaii

There is no single best place to propose on Oahu. There is the best place for the two of you: the beach where you watched your first sunrise on this trip, the lookout your partner keeps posting about, a quiet lawn under the mountains if crowds make you nervous. What every good spot has in common is simpler — soft light, a background that looks like Hawaii and a believable reason to be there.

We grouped twelve places by the kind of moment they create. Each one comes with the time we would pick and the details that are easy to miss when planning from home.

Sunrise beaches on the east side

The windward coast faces the sunrise, and on most mornings its beaches are close to empty at first light. If you can get your partner out of bed early, this is the most private kind of proposal Oahu has to offer.

Lanikai Beach

Pale sand, water in three shades of turquoise and the two Mokulua islands offshore — Lanikai is the view many people picture when they think of Hawaii. It is a residential neighborhood, so there is no beach parking lot: you reach the sand through narrow public paths between the houses, and street parking is limited and restricted in places. Arrive about half an hour before sunrise.

Waimanalo Bay

A few miles south, Waimanalo has the same soft sand with green Koʻolau cliffs behind it, and miles of shoreline where you can walk until you find your own stretch. One thing to know: the city beach parks along this coast don’t allow commercial activity, so photographers work out on the sand, which is state land with its own permit rules.

Kualoa Regional Park

Further up the windward coast, the open lawn of Kualoa Regional Park looks across the water to Mokoliʻi, the small cone-shaped island, with the ridges of Kualoa behind. The lawn makes it easy to stay far back without hiding behind anything, and morning light falls straight onto the mountains.

Ocean lookouts and dramatic coastline

For couples who want big scenery — wind, cliffs and deep blue water.

Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail

A paved trail climbs about a mile to viewpoints high above the ocean, with Manana (Rabbit Island) and the windward coast spread out below. It makes a great “let’s do a sunrise hike” cover story. There is no shade on the way, so go early, bring water, and in winter keep an eye out for humpback whales.

Lanai Lookout

A short stop off the coastal highway on the way to Makapuʻu, with layered lava rock shelves dropping into the ocean. On clear days you can see the islands of Lanai and Molokai across the channel. The rock is uneven and the waves below are powerful, so the proposal happens well back from the edge.

Halona Beach Cove

The small cove below the Halona Blowhole lookout became famous through a beach scene in the 1953 film From Here to Eternity. It is beautiful and intimate, but the way down is a steep, rocky path and the surf can be strong. Choose it only if you are both comfortable scrambling, and on a calm-water day.

City views above Honolulu

Tantalus Lookout

At Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Wayside, high above Honolulu, you look over the city, the harbor, Waikiki and Diamond Head at once. It feels removed from the beaches, and late afternoon is the time we like it best, when the city starts to glow.

Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout

The Pali Lookout sits on the edge of sheer green cliffs above the windward side, and the wind there can be remarkably strong. It makes for dramatic photos — hair flying, clouds racing over the ridge — but plan your outfit for it, and bring a hair tie.

Easy proposals near Waikiki

If you are staying in Waikiki and don’t want an early drive or a hike, these spots are minutes away.

Kaimana Beach and Diamond Head

A small, calm beach at the quiet end of Waikiki with Diamond Head directly behind. A morning walk here raises no questions at all, and you are back at your hotel for breakfast. More spots nearby are in our Waikiki photoshoot guide.

Magic Island

Just beyond the yacht harbor on the western edge of Waikiki, Magic Island wraps around a protected lagoon that faces the sunset. In the evening the paths fill with locals walking and watching the sky, so a proposal here blends right in.

Sunsets on the North Shore and the west side

Sunset Beach

The name says it all. In winter the North Shore gets huge surf and the beach becomes a show to watch from the sand; in summer the water settles down and you can walk right to its edge. Getting there from Waikiki takes roughly an hour, longer in traffic.

Ko Olina lagoons

The four lagoons on the west coast are sheltered by rock walls, lined with palms and face the sunset. They are perfect if you are staying at one of the Ko Olina resorts. Visitors from elsewhere can use the limited public parking at each lagoon, which fills up early.

How to keep it a surprise

  • Have a reason to be there. A sunrise hike, a sunset walk before dinner, a “photographer friend” who is taking pictures for your trip — choose a story your partner will believe.
  • Agree on a signal. Before the day, decide how you will tell the photographer you are about to propose: taking off a hat, a hand on the shoulder, stopping at a certain rock.
  • Keep the ring safe. Carry it in a zipped pocket, and open the box away from sand, cliff edges and the water’s edge.
  • Check the forecast together with us. Showers usually pass quickly, but wind and surf can change which side of the island makes sense.
  • Respect closures and private property. Some lookouts close at night, some parks require a permit for professional photography, and fences on the coast are there for a reason. We check the rules for your spot in advance.

Planning your proposal with us

You don’t have to plan this alone. We pick the place and the minute together with you, hide until the big question and finish with a short couple session. In Waikiki that fits into the mini session, from $399; elsewhere on the island it is $550 for the hour, plus travel. See how we plan it on our proposal photography page, or — if you are still choosing between islands — compare them on proposals across Hawaii. Then send us your date on Instagram.
