OAHU FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

Family sessions planned around your hotel, your car situation and the ages of your children — from a 45-minute walk-out session in Waikiki to sunrise on the windward coast.

Every family who writes to us asks the same first question in a different form: how much of our holiday will this take? On Oahu the honest answer depends on one thing — whether you have a rental car. With one, the whole island is open and the best family beach is twenty-five minutes away. Without one, there is still plenty worth photographing within walking distance of your room.

So this page is organized the way the decision actually gets made: by where you are staying, then by how old your children are. We live in Waikiki and shoot these beaches most weeks, which mostly means we know where the shade is and which lot is already full.

WHERE TO SHOOT, BY WHERE YOU ARE STAYING

Staying in Waikiki, no car

The quiet end of the beach toward Diamond Head, the banyans in Kapiʻolani Park, or the lagoon at the western end — all within a walk of the hotels. A 45-minute mini session fits between breakfast and the pool.

Staying in Waikiki, with a car

Twenty-five minutes over the pass puts you at Kailua Beach Park: flat water, real shade, restrooms and a parking lot. It is the most forgiving family beach on the island and worth the drive for a sunrise.

Staying in Ko Olina

The four lagoons are the calmest water on Oahu and your room is a short walk away. They face the sunset, so here we photograph at the end of the day rather than the start of it.

Staying on the North Shore

Haleʻiwa in summer, when the ocean lies down and the town behind you does the work. In winter the surf is enormous and we photograph from well back — spectacular, but not a day for toddlers at the waterline.

Grandparents in the group

Short walks and a bench: Ala Moana, Kahala, or the lawn at Kualoa. Kualoa keeps all-terrain beach wheelchairs at its staff office, and Kailua has access mats laid over the sand.

Eight family beaches compared — calm water, shade, parking and restrooms: best family beaches on Oahu.

PLANNING BY THE AGE OF YOUR CHILDREN

Babies and toddlers

Still water and a changing table within reach — which on this island means Kailua, Ala Moana or one of the lagoons out west. Twenty useful minutes is the whole session at that age, and we build around it rather than argue with it.

Four to eight

Give them a job — shells to collect, a wave to outrun — and they forget the camera exists. This is the age that produces the photographs parents actually print.

Teenagers

Easier than everyone fears, and the group we can take somewhere with a bit of a walk: lava rock, a ridge, a lookout above the coast.

Three generations

One location, short distances, a bench and shade. We shoot the group first, while everyone is fresh, then let the generations split into pairs.

OAHU FAMILY PHOTO FAQ

How much is a family photoshoot on Oahu?

Near your hotel: $399 buys roughly three quarters of an hour in a single spot. Want the whole hour and somewhere further out? $550, with travel added once we drive beyond the city. Either way you get every frame, next day.

Which beach is best for family photos on Oahu?

With a car, Kailua: flat water, trees to hide under, a bathhouse and a lot that is not full at seven. Without one, Ala Moana — ten minutes out of Waikiki and the reef flattens the ocean. The guide below weighs eight of them properly.

Sunrise or sunset with children?

Sunrise, almost always, and jet lag makes it easier than it sounds — children flying in from the mainland are awake at five for the first few days anyway. The windward beaches are empty at that hour and the light is soft.

What if one of the kids will not cooperate?

Normal, and not a problem. We stop asking, let them do their own thing and photograph that instead. Forced smiles are the one thing we cannot fix later.

Can you do it without a car?

Yes. Everything in the Waikiki list above sits within walking distance of the hotels and we meet you on the spot. Anywhere further afield — the windward side, the north — means the longer session and a car.

How far ahead should we book?

Sunrise slots in winter and the week around the holidays go first. Otherwise a couple of weeks is usually enough, and last-minute dates are worth asking about.
